Summer is Winding Down…

16 09 2012

My summer is just flying by! Only one week left until I start school. =( I just got back from a trip to San Francisco for 3 days and Las Vegas for 4 days, and it was really great! Here’s a recap of the things I accomplished over the last two weeks:

#68 Eat Sushi

A former coworker of mine goes to sushi almost every week, and he and his wife invited Alex and me out to show us the ropes! There’s a really awesome sushi place near my yoga studio, and they have some pretty reasonable happy hour pricing, so we checked it out. We got 3 rolls as well as some potstickers and coconut shrimp, and we were stuffed! It all tasted really good, and I know that we’ll definitely be going back sometime!

#60 Catch a Fish

My mom and her husband go fishing all the time, and I’ve been wanting to go with them to catch a fish for a while now. They wanted to wait til after their wedding so that they’d have more time, and I finally got to go! We were fishing for salmon, and we were going to go in the ocean, but the day we went there was a rough bar report, which mean that it was really rough on the water and the coast guard wasn’t letting anyone go out. So we went in a river instead, and we spent over 8 hours trying to get them to bite! We finally managed to hook one, and I was able to catch my first salmon ever!

#63 Take Pictures in a Photo Booth

One day when we were walking around in San Francisco, we came across a photo booth, so I recruited my friend Ashton to help me check this one off of my list! The photo booth we went to was a special one that let us access the video of our experience online, and it was funny to watch! You can access it here if you want to check it out.

#100 Learn to Not Mind the Taste of Beer

My boyfriend Alex LOVES beer, so I’ve been trying little sips of his all summer long. On our trip to San Francisco, we ate at a restaurant called Wipeout, and Alex ordered a bucket of mini Coronas for us to share. I figured that this was my opportunity to really seal the deal on this bucket list item, and a successfully finished a beer all by myself! I can’t say that it’s my favorite thing in the world, and I don’t think I’ll ever order one just for fun, but I like knowing that I can manage to drink a little at a party or a dinner if the occasion calls for drinking one. (As a disclaimer, I am 23 years old and legally old enough to drink alcoholic beverages, and I refrained from drinking until I turned 21.)

#107 Party in Vegas

After a few days in San Francisco, we caught a plane to Las Vegas! It was my very first time there, and I had a blast! We went out to a few different clubs/bars while we were there, and it was a really awesome experience. It was fun getting all dressed up to go out at night. We also did a lot of walking and sight seeing during the day, and I definitely look forward to going back!

#85 Gamble at a Casino

Since we were in Vegas, I naturally gambled a little! I played slots, some blackjack, a big wheel game, and a dice game called Sic Bo that was pretty fun. I didn’t lose too much money, and on my last day I put in a $20 bill and cashed out at $50, so I was happy to end on a positive note.

#94 Nap in the Sun

Our hotel in Vegas had a wave pool and a lazy river so we spent several hours out there. It also gave me the perfect excuse to lay out napping in the sun.

August Adventures

3 09 2012

Since my last post was almost a month ago, I guess it goes without saying that I’ve been severely slacking in my bucket list blogging. The problem is that I spent almost the entire last month house sitting for 3 different families, and was therefore not at home in my usual routine of blogging at night before bed. Yes, I do have a laptop and should have just posted from there, but… well, once you get behind, it’s hard to catch up! At any rate, here is a brief recap of the bucket list items I completed over the last several weeks!

#7a Read A Tale of Two Castles

I started reading this book, only to discover that I just read it earlier this year. I don’t remember when exactly I managed to get around to reading it, but from the moment I read the first few sentences, I realized that I knew exactly what the story was and how it ended. Since my goal of putting books on my summer reading list was to read books that I hadn’t gotten around to yet or hadn’t read in a really long time, I decided to just not worry about this one. Maybe I will have forgotten the story and will enjoy re-reading it in another two or three years.

#7d & #7e Read the Kane Chronicles: Throne of Fire & Serpent’s Shadow

I was really excited to finish out this trilogy of stories from Rick Riordan. I had re-read the first in the series earlier in the summer, and was really looking forward to see how the story ended. It was definitely interesting, and I really enjoyed them, though I was a little bummed that I could pretty well figure out some of the things that were happening before the author explained them to us. I like it when a story line is so complex that I can’t figure it out and I just have to keep reading to figure out how it all works. At any rate they were still great stories, and I’m glad I got around to reading them.

#51 Play a Game at a Fair

A group of my friends were all going to our local county fair, so I seized the opportunity to play a game and ended up winning a prize. I was really blown away by how ridiculously expensive the games were, and couldn’t believe how many people were playing them. It cost me $3 to throw ONE dart at a wall of balloons. Needless to say, I don’t think I’ll be playing very many games at fairs in the future.

#65 Build an Epic Sand Castle

My wonderful boyfriend, Alex and I took advantage of a gorgeous day at the coast to build a sand castle. I don’t even remember the last time I had built one, but I know I was much younger. I remember the flimsy plastic shovels, and only having one sized bucket, so you couldn’t really stack things on top of each other. Since I was determined to build a good castle, I came prepared with a big shovel, and several different sizes of plastic containers. Alex and I decided to build a moat, and to use the sand from where the moat was to build up the castle. Unfortunately, part way through the process of piling up a mound of sand, we realized that we were digging up a bunch of tiny baby crabs! They were smaller than my pinky nail and their shells weren’t hard yet, but they were definitely squirming and wiggling and in our way! I wasn’t interested in starting over, so we ceased building the height of the castle up any more and just tried to make it look even. We added some towers on top, a bridge across the moat, and decorated it with a bunch of nearby shells and feathers. I think we ended up with a pretty awesome castle!

#71 Dress Up Super Fancy

My mom was getting married this summer, so I knew I’d be dressing up super fancy for it. A dress, heels, hair, nails, makeup… I felt like I was getting ready for a prom!

#79 Temporary Tattoo

I was soooooo excited to see my favorite childhood “zebra gum” when I was checking out at a grocery store one day! there are several different fruity flavors, the gum is striped, and the wrappers have temporary tattoos on them! You just moisten your skin, set the paper on, and it transfers the tattoo! Absolutely nothing has changed about this gum since I was a little kid, and it was a huge trip down memory lane to find a pack.

#95 Get a Massage

I bought a discounted massage from a site similar to Groupon, and decided that it would be the perfect opportunity to check this item off of my list. Unfortunately, the lady didn’t push very hard at all, and I don’t feel like very many of my knots got worked out. It was still relaxing though, and I look forward to getting one again sometime. (I forgot to take a picture.)

Whew! It feels great to be all caught up again! This week I will be eating sushi, going fishing, and getting ready to leave on a trip to Vegas for the first time! Sadly, I only have 3 weeks until school starts. =(

#53 Yoga Shorts & #26 Claw Machine

7 08 2012

#53 Buy My First Pair of Yoga Shorts

Last week I finally bought my first pair of yoga shorts, and they’re pretty fun! They’re just simple, black, stretchy Nike shorts, but I like them. I’ve been doing yoga for almost 5 months, but until now I have only worn yoga capris. I tried out a class with the shorts, but I have to say I still prefer the capris. I get really sweaty in my yoga class and the capris help to absorb some of my sweat so I can still do the poses, but with just shorts on my legs were pretty slippery. I’m still glad that I got these shorts though, and I’ll still wear them to other workouts.

#26 Win a Stuffed Animal From a Claw Machine

I’d been working on this one all summer, giving money to several claw machines around town, but I still had nothing to show for it. I finally got fed up at Red Robin when I had a (semi) cute koala bear grabbed by the claw and heading to the drop, when the claw machine abruptly halted against the end of it’s track and the koala fell against the window. I decided to just feed a final 50 cents into a “Winner Every Time” bulldozer game and call this one complete. I was lucky enough to get 2 things – vampire teeth and a finger trapper. Although it’s not a stuffed animal, I’m calling it quits on this one!

#16 Participate in a Charity Event

4 08 2012

I wasn’t sure what exactly I wanted to do for this item, but when signs started popping up for our local fire department’s annual chicken fundraiser, I knew that I had to try their chicken! Every year for the last 6 years I’ve lived at my current home, I’ve talked about how we should try their chicken, and every year I always forget to go. But this year we made it! They set up these cooking/smoking pits in front of the station and place all of these half chickens in between two metal racks to cook. When they are done they are so juicy, smokey, and full of bbq deliciousness! I think we will definitely have to go back next year!

My Starry, Bouncy, Exciting Weekend!

30 07 2012

#59 Attend a Concert

I had a very exciting weekend, which started out with attending a concert on Friday to see Miranda Cosgrove aka iCarly. I had no idea she was even coming to town until a friend posted on Facebook asking who else was going just a couple weeks ago. Since tickets were only $20 and she was performing pretty close to where my parents live, I jumped at the chance to go! I searched online to try to find out if she was going to have a meet and greet but I couldn’t find any information, so I emailed someone on her website asking about it. She referred me to Miranda’s tour manager and gave me her email address, and when I contacted her to ask if Miranda would be doing a meet and greet, she said she’d add us to the list! My sisters and I were thrilled to have the opportunity to meet her, and she was so sweet and fun in person. She also put on an amazing concert, and eventually I will get around to editing and uploading video clips of her show. Since we got the meet and greet passes, we also got to watch the concert from a fenced in area right in front of the stage, which was incredible, because we didn’t have a crowd of hundreds of people pushing in on us. Her super cute drummer even came up to the edge of the stage and tossed one of his drum sticks to me!  It was a really amazing night!

#44 Jump On a Giant Trampoline

The next morning I convinced my dad that we needed to put our giant trampoline up again for the summer, and after about an hour, we had it up and running (or should I say bouncing?). I absolutely LOVE jumping on the trampoline. There is something so thrilling about using your own power to launch yourself high into the air, and then to attempt flips and tricks that you are unable to do standing on dry land. My legs were definitely not in jumping shape though, and I am sure that they will be sore for a long time!

#49 Flashlight Hide and Seek

My parents went out to a concert event in town for the evening and my sisters invited a friend over to spend the night. Since we had the house to ourselves, it was the perfect opportunity to play flashlight hide and seek! It really is just basic hide and seek, but we turned out all the lights in the house, used our phones as flashlights to find a hiding spot, and the seeker used a head-light and big flashlight to seek out everyone else. It’s been years since I played hide and seek with my sisters, and it definitely took me down memory lane! Playing it in the dark made it a little bit more exciting though. My littlest sister Haley was the definite winner, because she was only found first once (the last round we played), and she never had to be “it”. Being little has its perks sometimes!

#64 Camp In a Tent In The Back Yard & #17 Sleep Under the Stars

My sisters and I had decided to camp out in the back yard, so earlier in the day we set up our giant tent. We had to read the manual and ask Dad for help once, but eventually we got it all figured out. Since it was a perfectly clear night, we decided not to put the rain cover on, and we got to fall asleep with the stars overhead, so I’m going to count this as two things. I’d like to say that I made it all the way through the night, but I’m afraid I didn’t. I woke up at 3:30 and had to pee really bad. On top of that, I never can get comfortable in a sleeping bag. I get too warm, which causes me to sweat, but my head freezes, so I get really cold, and I end up being a sweaty, cold, hot, uncomfortable mess. Since I had to go inside to use the bathroom, I decided to just sleep the rest of the night in my own bed. So I didn’t make it the whole night, but I think I did these well enough. Camping is just NOT my thing!

#70 Hot Tub + Glow Sticks, #41 Donate Blood, #8k Watch The Borrowers

23 07 2012

#70 Hot Tub + Glow Sticks

I first saw the idea to let kids take a bath in the dark with glow sticks on Pinterest, and I thought it would be really fun to adapt this for my summer bucket list. When you combine house sitting at a place with a hot tub (they’ve assured me that they don’t mind if I have people over), with my Jello shots, and a hand full of young adults, you’ve got the perfect mix to add in glow sticks! I picked up a couple packs in the $1 section at Target a few weeks back, and it was the perfect scenario to bring them out! Unfortunately, it’s hard to take good pictures in the dark, while showing both the people and the glow sticks, but I still got a few decent shots of our excitement. Adding in glow sticks was definitely a fun touch to an otherwise ordinary hot tub!

#41 Donate Blood For the First Time

I have a serious dislike for needles, but I got stuck by them 5 times within 3 days! Since I am starting nursing school this fall, I went in on Friday to get my tetanus shot updated, to have a little blood drawn to prove I’m immune to the Chicken Pox, and to have a test showing that I haven’t been in contact with tuberculosis. Then, I had signed up to give blood at my church blood drive on Sunday, so they got to stick me a couple more times for that! I had never given blood before, but I had always thought that it was a really neat idea. It’s something that almost anyone can do, that doesn’t cost them any money, that can help save peoples lives. I know that if I had a serious injury that required blood transfusions that I’d be incredibly grateful to the donors, and felt like it was something I should try at least once. I was incredibly nervous leading up to my appointment because my wonderful boyfriend (who is a paramedic) was kind enough to talk to me about how big the needle was.  I can do pretty well with small needles, but the bigger ones really shake me up! I never actually saw the needle because I kept my head turned the whole time and it was covered with a piece of gauze while I was donating, but I could definitely feel it going in and coming out! Inside the bloodmobile I had to sit in a chair that elevated your legs, keeping you in a leaned back position. Once the needle was in, I had to gently squeeze a foam ear of corn, and after several minutes (that seemed like an eternity) they told me I was done!  I mostly felt fine afterwards, except that I was pretty lethargic, took a long nap in the afternoon, and felt hungrier and thirstier than usual. Going to yoga this morning was also a lot more tiring that it normally is, but I think the side effects I experienced were pretty normal considering I gave away at least 10% of my blood! The best part was that our local Dari Marts sponsor blood donors by giving them a free pint of ice cream when you donate! I don’t know how often I’ll donate blood, but I definitely could see myself doing it again sometime in the future!

#8k Watch The Borrowers

I rented this one randomly with my free kids rental pass from blockbuster, and what a lucky gem it turned out to be! I loved it so much that I HAD to add it to my list so I could blog about it. Is that cheating? Well I don’t really care! I knew that The Borrowers is a book (though I’ve never read it), and that they just came out with a Japanese anime version of it called The Secret World of Arrietty, which I loved, so I decided to try this one out. First of all, it was really neat how they showed the story of tiny people living in our world, and I thought it was really cute how it was set in Europe. But the best part was discovering 3 characters from the Harry Potter movies! This movie had younger versions of Draco Malfoy, Arthur Weasley, and Professor Slughorn! Talk about an amazing surprise! It also had Hugh Laurie aka House who played a police officer, but that wasn’t nearly so exciting as the others. Anyways, it was a cute movie, but if you’re a Harry Potter buff like me, you should totally watch it to see the characters! Little Tom Felton (Draco) playing Peagreen was just adorable! Definitely glad I stumbled upon this one!

Mail Updates, #8h Watch The Goonies, #81 Jello Shots, #82 Flavored Cigar, & #108 High Tea

21 07 2012

I’ve been house sitting over the last several days, which has caused me to really slack off on my blogging. Therefore, I’ve crammed a LOT into this post! So without further ado, here we go!

Mail Updates!

I received two AWESOME pieces of mail this week! In May, I sent a couple care packages to our troops fighting in Afghanistan (see my post here) and this week I was thrilled to receive a thank you note from one of the soldiers! The second piece of mail I was delighted to see was a little package from Sarah at Gone With the Summer! I had entered a drawing on Sarah’s blog to win an adorable pair of heart-shaped sunglasses, and  was so excited to find out that I won! Since winning a prize was on my summer bucket list, it was an especially awesome that I got to check it off by winning a prize from a fellow bucket list blogger! Sarah included a super cute note, and I absolutely LOVE the sunglasses! I will definitely have to wear these this summer!

#8h Watch The Goonies

I came across this coupon for a free month pass for kids and family rentals at Blockbuster, and seized the opportunity to rent The Goonies! I had never seen this movie and (like most of the other movies on my list) had no idea what it was about, but I knew that it was set in Astoria, OR, which is just a 3 hour drive away from me! My wonderful boyfriend, Alex, had worked as a paramedic up there for a couple years, and he was getting such a kick out of seeing the town in the movie, because apparently it looks almost exactly the same, and he said he even ran a call in the blue house right next door to The Goonies house! Since the house is pretty close to where I live, I think I’ll have to take a trip up there to see it in person sometime! I thought that the movie was excellent, though I can’t believe that it was only rated PG! The kids said, “Oh sh*t!” multiple times throughout the movie, and there was even a scene where they broke a man’s private part off of a nude statue and were trying to stick it back on! I guess they had different standards of what is appropriate back when this movie was made! Nevertheless, I thought it was awesome, and it’s definitely one of my favorite movies that I’ve watched from my list so far.

#81 Make Jello Shots

I’ve been wanting to do this item on my list for ages now, and I finally decided it was the perfect opportunity to do it while I was house sitting! This particular family has a gorgeous house with a beautiful view of the city and their own private hot tub, and they’ve made it clear that they don’t mind if I throw a party. I’d never really hosted a party before, but it turned out to be really fun! I decided to make the Jello shots extra fun by using two different flavors, which were peach-mango and blackberry pomegranate, and they tasted amazing together! I tilted the tray at an angle to set in the fridge, so that the colors would be slanted in the end. Then I added the top layer and let them chill again. I think they turned out perfect! I definitely could see myself making these again someday, and they really weren’t that difficult!

#82 Smoke a Flavored Cigar

So, earlier this summer I smoked a little bit of a swisher sweet cigar for the first time, and I was thoroughly unimpressed by the taste. I was really hoping that smoking a chocolate flavored cigar would taste better, but unfortunately it didn’t. I can now say I’ve smoked things twice in my life, and I have no desire to try for a third. But oh well, now I can say that I’ve tried it!

#108 Attend High Tea

A dear friend named Jennifer invited me to attend high tea with her at Scatter Joy tea room in Junction City, which is just a few miles away from Eugene. I had never been to a high tea, but was thrilled to try it out! We got to try 2 different pots of tea, and we chose Caramel Creme Brulee and Jasmine Green tea. Both were very good! We also got a dainty little salad, and a multi tiered tray of finger sandwiches, scones, and other goodies! I was so glad that Jennifer knew what she was doing, because I was clueless! I learned that you drop a sugar cube into your tea by letting it slowly slide down the side of your cup, rather than just plopping it in. I also learned that the little tray of yellow goop was not butter, but rather a delicious lemon curd, and that you don’t eat the said lemon curd like a pudding, but rather by putting it on your scones! My favorite was the dessert, which was a homemade pink lemonade cake, and oh my, was it delicious! The tea room was absolutely adorable, with all kinds of dainty little treasures and treats, and I could definitely see myself going back there for another girls day out!
